Accessible Masterpieces for the Blind and Visually Impaired In the Tel Aviv Museum

In a unique cooperation between the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and the Central Library for Blind, seven artworks were selected from the collections of the Modern department and made accessible for the visually impaired.

Leading artists, starting with Claude Monet, Marc Chagall, Amadeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso, Jean Dubuffet, Josef Albers and up to Roy Lichtenstein, reflect in their pieces the transition from figurative painting to abstract painting, from the late 19th century to the early 20th century.

All the artworks were made accessible using: Text – an expanded description of the artwork's details; Audio – recording of the expanded description, which can be heard on the Museum's voice guide; Tactile graphics – embossed relief of the pieces using braille printing; Braille – translation of the expanded description into braille. In the accessibility process, it was decided that in every painting, only the central objects would be in relief, so that the relief would be as comprehensible and clear as possible to whoever touches it. Beside each artwork hangs a label in braille, marking the piece as accessible.
  • You can receive the booklet and the audio guide at the volunteers' station (near the main entrance to the Tel Aviv Museum.)
  • For the Blind and the Lender free of charge - with the presentation of a "Blind certificate".
