Ascending

"There is no moon. No one speaks as we step out of our home for the last time, into the dark night. I glance at the village huts, afraid of being discovered, of my heart thumping too loudly, but around us all is still. We quickly walk through the familiar surroundings and beyond, far beyond." So begins the journey of young Anika and her family, on foot over mountains and deserts from Ethiopia to Sudan, driven by one desire - to reach Jerusalem. The journey was longer and harder than they could have imagined, and the cost heavier. But those who survived had another unexpected journey awaiting them – the journey for acceptance into Israeli society. We follow Anika, and then her children, through this emotionally charged story of bravery, disappointment, and determination. It is the story of Ethiopian Jews and their two journeys.
