CENTRAL LIBRARY FOR THE BLIND VISUALLY IMPAIRED & HANDICAPPED

TEXTBOOKS AND REFERENCE BOOKS

In Israel, blind children are integrated into normal schools. In order to help with their integration, the Library has taken it upon itself to produce textbooks – a difficult mission, considering the diverse syllabuses, some of which are based on visual material, and which are regularly updated.

In order for the books to be with the students by the beginning of each year, students are asked to submit their booklists 4 months prior to the beginning of the academic year. Dyslexics and students with learning difficulties should locate the required books in the internet catalog and order them.

If there is no available recording of the book, the following details should be submitted by e-mail: title, author, publisher and year of publication.

In order to have a book produced, students should send a good quality print copy of the edition being studied to the Library.

A personal reminder is usually sent to all students at the beginning of May, asking them to submit their booklists by 20th May. During the months of May through August, the Library staff concentrates on copying the books into Braille and recorded format, according to students' requests.

Braille textbooks stay in the possession of the students. It is not necessary to return them to the Library.

Books recorded on MP3 CDs, which are edited in line with the print version, must be returned to the Library at the end of the school year.

Readers studying at universities, colleges and other institutions of higher learning who are interested in copying their required textbooks to Braille or recorded format should check the catalog to see whether the books already exist. The list of required books which are not already available from the Library should be sent submitted 3 months prior to the beginning of the academic year.

We recommend that you consult with a Librarian.
