March 2009
Dear Reader,
• A new book
Book stores have just put on display Amos Oz new book Temunot Mechaey
Hakfar and we are pleased to inform you that Dina Riffman is about to
complete the narration of this book and it can already be ordered.
• Books turned in to movies
The film Naar Hachidot mi-Mumbai (based on the book Slumdog Millionaire
by Vikas Swarup) has recently been awarded an Oscar for The Best Picture
at the 81st Annual Academy Awards Ceremony.
For those of you who are intrigued by the movie we recommend reading
the book in Braille. The book is also available on CD − narrated by
Malka Machfud.
The book naar Kriaah (The Reader by Bernhard Schlink) has also been made into a movie and Kate Winslet who portrays the heroine has won an Oscar too. The book has also been recorded and is now available. Narrator: Orna Erb.
• Five books of the Torah
The library is proud to inform you that a short time ago − actually,
just in time for the 2009 Biennial Jerusalem International Book Fair
− we have completed the recording and proof-reading of the five first
books of the Torah, The Chumash; the books are narrated by Dan Kanner
and our readers may purchase the CD for just 25.00 NIS. The price for
non-subscribers is 50.00 NIS.
Payment can be made by check or credit card. Please call Rachel, the
Library's bookkeeper.
Dan Kanner is also scheduled to finish within the next few months the recording the whole Bible, combined with Olam Hatanach book series, a scientific interpretation of the Bible by Yediot Ahronot − Sifrei Chemed publication. A newsletter will be published as soon as the project is completed.
• An error in the calendar
Itzhak Damari, a loyal reader, has brought it to our attention that
an error has occurred in the Braille edition of the calendar mailed
to the readership in celebration of the upcoming New Year, where a notation
was entered saying that candle lighting times are according to standard
time. This note was entered erroneously. Please disregard it.
• The 2009 Biennial Jerusalem International Book
Fair
The Library's staff, readers and many inquisitive visitors visited the
Library's stand at the Jerusalem International Book Fair.
This success encourages us to join again in this cultural event and
to heartily invite our readership to participate in writer-reader encounters
and enjoy the various events offered during the Fair.
I would also like to take this opportunity and thank Avi Shacharon and
Zehava Ehrlich as well as the entire Library staff for the many hours
of work they had put in order to bring about the impressive display
of the Library's activities in the Fair.
I hope you continue to enjoy reading,
Uri Cohen
Director
