CENTRAL LIBRARY FOR THE BLIND VISUALLY IMPAIRED & HANDICAPPED

NEWSLETTER

June 2010

Dear Reader,

• 50 Braille readers, 25 jeep drivers and companions – all in all 130 persons will participate in the Braille Navigation Day that will take place on Mount Carmel on June 3rd, at the end of which there will be a reception given by the Israeli Navy which will include a visit on board a missile boat.
The Netanya and Tel Aviv libraries will be closed to the public on that day since most of the Library's staff will take part in the event.

• As of January 2010 the Library has stopped copying books on tape. Readers who have not yet read books on CD's were advised to buy MP3 players.
Those few readers who still read books on tape are hereby informed hat we are in the process of clearing out our books on tape and are reorganizing the catalog. Please place your orders for books on CD's only by means of the Telesefer or on the internet.

• We have recently completed one of our most important projects - the reorganization of our digital book collection in a secured communications room.
In this room the books are protected by means of high standard security measures. They are safe from natural disasters such as earthquakes, humidity, and fire. One of the security appliances installed is a camera that allows a continuous surveillance of the room even when the premises are unattended.
There are some 4,000 books in the collection, and one of the important tasks being carried out presently is the conversion of all the analog material that's been recorded since the 60's into digital format as well as placing it in the secured room. In doing so the Library aims to ensure the securing the recorded books as well as their high quality for the benefit of the readership now and in the future.

• Daniella Lehavi, one of the most established handbags and shoes designers in Israel is celebrating the Hebrew Book Week by designing a limited edition of leather bookmarks, all revenues thereof to be donated to the Central Library for the Blind. The bookmarks will be available in shops between the 2nd and 12th of June 2010 at 39 NIS each. We appreciate Daniella Lehavi's initiative and hope this will promote her products.

Enjoy the books.
