CENTRAL LIBRARY FOR THE BLIND VISUALLY IMPAIRED & HANDICAPPED

NEWSLETTER

February 2008

Dear Braille readers,

I invite you to join in the competition Braille Navigation. The event will take place on Thursday 3 April.

This time the area of navigation will in the Ramat Menashe region. The itinerary passes through an old village that has the feel of times gone by. From there we visit an agricultural farm, which leads us to a mountain with a summit that overlooks the Yizreal Valley, and all the settlements and trails that twist and wind through the most beautiful forests in the country.

The itinerary is described in a series of instructions that are written in Braille, and which will be handed out at the starting point.

The navigator has to direct the jeep driver along the twisting paths while completing various tasks along the way, and while keeping within a time schedule.

The finishing point is in the air force base in Ramat David, which will host us for lunch and a visit to one of the squadron bases.

The agenda for the day will be sent to participants closer to the date of the event. The number of places is limited, so we advise anyone interested to register with Mirit on receipt of this letter. Registration can be by telephone, by email (which we recommend) or by sending a letter in Braille.

Sincerely,

Uri Cohen
Director
The Central Library for the Blind

Website

Careful thought and long deliberations have gone into the design of the website.

Our general approach is that an accessible website should give the option of being able to listen to the content without necessitating additional equipment. Every surfer of the Library’s website can reach their subject of interest by navigating with the help of the keyboard, and can listen to the material that appears on the site.

We are aware of the complications involved in ordering books using the internet catalog. Because the Library’s internet catalog is an Ex-Libris program, the Library cannot alter the way it functions. In a few months, however, the Library will start using a new program, Aleph 500, which will make ordering books and following up on orders much easier.

Enjoy your reading.
